Fear
Mist filled land
Hiding the gold of life.
An illusion, but not
To the ones that see-not.
Heart must awaken,
And eye must see.
JC Husfelt, D.D. 1999

With a look of courage, Jesus would state, “Fear is born and breed of separation and one of our greatest enemies. It is the great separator from God and the opposite of divine love. If an organized religion is structured in fear, it cultivates in the shadows the evil actions of separation instead of sowing in the light the loving actions of oneness.”

“My beloved students, do you know of any organized religion that does not separate by their dogma and doctrine?” Jesus would ask and then wait for feedback and discussion. “Besides organized religion, think for a moment, the number of businesses, professions and organization that have fear as a base and/or as an underlying current and/or as a part of their message. And why is this; because fear tends to be the greatest motivation in life, negative one that it is. In our culture the advertising and marketing industry is rooted in the promotion of fear—the fear of not being accepted or belonging, the fear of growing older or not being youthful—to name just two fears that are encouraged in a society that values external power and image not internal power and vision.

To many people these fears, as well as the fear of failure, fear of relationship, fear of death, and the fear of life itself (all fear of the unknown), create a sense of powerlessness, which leads to dysfunctional behaviors that give an impression of power (illusionary power that it is) and makes possible the existence and acceptance of fear based belief systems and organizations.”

Jesus would continue by asking; “In a culture and society ruled by fear, how can anyone begin to approach a level of divine love, power and fearlessness?”

“Courage and faith, my beloved ones.” he would say, “These will help us open the gates to the Kingdom Within and to the inner core of our strength—our heart, which will help us bring our fears out of the darkness and into the light. This transformational power that we all have within us fosters the courage for us to face these fears. By confronting our fears, we are able to let go of the ones that we can, transform other ones, and finally make peace with the fears that we can’t transform or let go of. It’s normal and human to have fear, just never let it inhibit your life, keep you separate or keep you from your bliss.

The qualities of faith and courage let’s us see through the illusion of fear and its origin, which is separation. Separation may lead to violence at one extreme or isolation at the other extreme. When we feel isolated, from God, from others and from ourselves, we feel alone. And feeling alone and disconnected, without a sense of identity, we feel fearful.  This leads us back to the core issues of our security, which opens the gates to the realms of the unknown. And the unknown is where our deepest set fears are located. Death is the greatest unknown and usually one of our greatest fears. Change is an unknown so people fear change. A person that is different from us (different color, different religion, different beliefs, etc.) is an unknown, thus we feel separate from them and this may lead to a fear of them, which may lead to conflict with them. And herein lies the solution to peace.”

“What do you mean, Jesus?” A student would ask.

“Fear is the key to peace; not the holding on to fear, but the letting go of fear. Forgiveness of the past and the present is the first step followed by the releasing of all fears surrounding the conflict. The second step is the righting of all inequalities, personal, social, cultural, political and economic, that were probably the root cause of the conflict in the first place. The third is opening the floodgates of compassion. And the fourth and final stage is viewing each other as divine human beings and as each others brother and sister.”

“Can you give us an example of this?” Another student would ask.

“Yes, let’s take the situation in Northern Ireland. To do this we need to travel back to the 1600’s or 1690 to be exact. This was the year in July of the defeat of the Irish (Catholic) King James II by the English (Protestant) King William (the Orange) III at the Battle of Boyne. And with the victor went the spoils of war, the Northern part of the island of Ireland to England and the economic well-being and prosperity to the Protestants. Even today the victors (Protestants) rub the nose of the losers (Catholics) in the proverbial “toilet” by celebrating the victory of William the Orange each July by the march of the Protestant “Orangemen”. This just rubs salt in a wound over 300 hundred years old. In the past three decades sectarian violence has claimed over 3600 people—divine human beings. All in the name of religion, economic inequality, greed and power. Even John Hume, leader of the nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party, has acknowledged, after being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998, that the Protestant community had made Northern Ireland “a cold house” for Catholics.”

Jesus waited for questions, then continued on, “To achieve peace we need to begin with forgiveness. Not only between the Catholics and the Protestants as a whole but between individuals as well as between families. This is forgiveness of the past three decades and forgiveness of the past three hundred years. Remember, forgiveness is not about forgetting the past or justifying the actions and behaviors of the past but it is about putting to rest and letting go of the anger, the guilt, the resentment, and the shame of the past. If restitution is needed, it is to be given. This takes time but is the crucial first step. During this same period of time, fear has to be faced and then let go—fear of each other, fear of the unknown, fear of each other’s religion and the fear of violence. Disarmament is not necessary, however; people create violence not guns. Guns are only the issue when there seems to be no other solution and fear is running rampant throughout people’s hearts and minds. When the fear is gone of the guns ever being used again then guns are a non-issue and ironically are not needed and thus can be made into farming implements. The next step is to provide economic, political and social equality—all haves and no have-nots. Throughout all of these stages of peace, compassion begins to blossom and permeate people’s hearts and minds, which eventually will lead to the unity of Northern Ireland where everyone will see each other as divine human beings, first and foremost, and therefore treat each other with loving caring respect as each other’s brother and sister. This is my peace process. I feel within my heart that this course of action will eventually lead to—lasting peace.”
