A smile will break through the dark barriers of your mind as well as the mind of others as the obstacles of hate and anger that have kept you locked away within a cell of slavery begin dissolving as does a mist on a wind swept morn. To laugh and to smile is to have your heart blossom as a flower for all to see. It is the most awesome gift that we may give to ourselves, to others and to the earth. If you want to communicate with nature’s children, the animals of the earth and the birds of the heaven, why then begin smiling at them. And when you are ready, sit under a tree and begin laughing. My dear ones when we smile and laugh from our hearts we are at one with all others and ourselves—a joining that triggers our souls memory of the light and love of the heavens. One of the best in-direct teachings that I have ever learned from another person, who just happened to be a Zen Roshi, was many years ago in Mexico. We were deep in the jungles of the Yucatan at a seldom-visited Mayan religious site. It was a hot sweltering early afternoon in August when we both decided to climb to the top of this very tall and steep and barely un-earthed pyramid. To say the least it was very hard going. The heat and the steepness made it physically challenging and mentally unbearable. There were no words being said but with each step I was getting more and more upset and mad. At times like this if we could only step outside of ourselves and observe the situation from a neutral stand point we would be amazed at why we are angry. Many times it’s the goals and the expectations that we have put on ourselves and because of this we usually miss the magic of the moment. It was no different with me except in the next instant came the teaching; Richard started laughing and laughing and then I got it and I started laughing and laughing at nothing except the moment. Still there were no words being spoken. But the last and most difficult of the climb turned out to be the most magical and the easiest. What a life lesson in so many different levels—when you laugh you relax and release the muscular tension in your body and thus physical activity is easier, reality is truly a state of mind, and on and on. We have all heard the saying that when the ‘going gets tough the tough get going’ but I want to add that it’s really about when life gets tough—LAUGH.” |
