Chapter 11
Capitalism
“Only when the last tree has died
and the last
river has been poisoned
and the last fish
has been caught
will we realize we cannot eat
money.”
Cree Indian Proverb
It’s the right thing to do—for the greater good.
These are words that you will never hear or said within the capitalistic
paradigm. Even with the emergence of green commerce, we still discover profits,
at whatever cost, outweighing all of the other so-called ecological responsible
hyperbolic language of concern for the environment. Making disgusting amounts
of money and wealth for the few still holds supreme as these are the marching
orders of Capitalism. As usual hypocrisy is alive and well.
Things will never change as long as the capitalistic
paradigm reigns supreme. No matter how much of an attempt is made to present
the illusion of being half-pregnant, such as compassionate capitalism or green
capitalism, the whole purpose of capitalism is the bottom-line. It is
fundamentally meant to profit the few at the expense of the majority while
depleting and ultimately destroying vast natural resources and the various
creatures that depend on them and a balanced eco-system for their survival and
continuance.
It is the same as a church deeming themselves Christian but
then stating that they don’t believe in original sin—sorry, if you
are Christian then original sin is part of your belief; if not, then you and
your church are not Christian. The same goes for economics. If we put forth
that we are green and striving for a partnership with nature, then the paradigm
that we would subscribe to would need to be egalitarian in nature not
capitalistic. Of course, this is not occurring, money is still the siren song
and the only alternatives up to the present time have been socialistic in
context, which in my mind is another failed paradigm. Further on, I briefly
present a new alternative social/economic paradigm called Intrinsic
Egalitarianism.
At the present though and quite simply, our world is ruled
by a materialistic elitist cadre of political/religious/corporate/banker
scavengers that bottom feed off of the fear-soaked blood of their people. One
time in Central America I happened to be
talking to a British woman who was the executive secretary to the head of a
worldwide management consulting company. After a few minutes of the usual
polite ‘chit chat,’ she began to open up to me her suppressed
feelings about her boss. Undoubtedly his work and home life is so much easier
because of her diligence in handling his financial and personal affairs. In a
world guided by the light of Intrinsic Egalitarianism, we would anticipate
respect and kindness in return for her unwavering efforts. But in our present
world governed by the greedy egotistical darkness of Capitalism….
After a few minutes, she finally poured out her true
feelings to me. I was a stranger, but a safe one, reflecting a feeling within
her heart that I would listen to her unconditionally while making no judgments
or assumptions about her. Always guarded in her work-life and presenting an
image—a false face—that was expected of her, she truly had no one
to talk to about her resentments, angers and frustrations. The following are a
few of her comments paraphrased:
I know everything about my boss—his financial affairs, even his
dosage of blood pressure medication, but do you suppose that he knows anything
about me… no…. He’s rude to me… even one time he told
me that I wasn’t being paid to think….
How sad, but on the other hand, how angering that one human
being, so giving and loyal, would be treated as such by another human being.
And to make things even more out of balance and worse, her boss is the CEO of a
company that helps other companies manage their people—the greatest and
most precious resource that any company can have are its people; not just the elites
at the top of the pile, but every employee is equal and worthwhile and deserves
respect and a caring attitude—except in today’s world. Capitalism
is a scourge on the earth. It will be viewed as the darkest of the dark
paradigms that have ever occurred on this earth.
Inequality, war, habitat change,
warmer oceans, global heating up and melting down—this is the legacy of
Capitalism. In the name of profit and Capitalism, “things that normally
happen in geologic time are happening during the span of a human
lifetime.”[i]And this foreshadows the foretold
‘earth changes.’
