Quest For The Holy Grail
Celtic Myth & Magic
2005
Sacred Pilgrimage seeking the knowledge and power of
the Druids, the Merlin (Myrddin), and
the Sun and the Serpent.
Explore the legends and the land that gave birth to
J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.
Humans are basically “wayfarers” or wanderers ever seeking,
consciously or unconsciously, home, a return to paradise where our fathers
and mothers came from—our ancestors, and the high places and low places
where the ancient ones communed directly with heaven and earth. So it is that
sacred pilgrimage extends far back into the very haze of humanities awakening
as a source and wellspring of religious culture and myth. To ever seek over the
far horizon stirs the very lifeblood of the spiritual wayfarer in their
on-going quest for the magic and power of the un-familiar and the ever
aliveness of that moment of sacred space and sacred time. To quest is to feel
alive; to feel alive is to quest.

Greenman by Peter Pracownik
In the background is St. Nectan's Glen.
Join us and experience the quest and the magic. Our quest
takes us within the heart of the Arthurian legends, the Celtic/Druidic
mysteries, the Greenman and the transformational power of Merlin, the Sun (Archangel Michael
or Mikael) and the Serpent (Mary/Goddess). We will travel through a timeless
landscape that will transport us into an Otherworld of alchemy, shapeshifting
and magic.
Archangel Mikael is said to be the angel of this time of transformation — from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. It rests with him
to be the guardian of the light and truth. His energy or ley-line runs straight
from Cornwall to the East. Mikael’s masculine energy is synonymous with the sun
and spirit. Coiled around Archangel Mikael’s sun energy-line (sword) lies the
energy-line of Mary or Miriam representing serpent power and feminine energy.
The two ley-lines flow together through the high places and
the caves, valleys and wells of Southwest England. The sun and serpent together
form a trail, which includes numerous sacred sites, awesome stone circles,
churches and earth works, many of which are rarely known or visited.

The Sun and the Serpent, St. Michael's Mount, 1998
These two
energy-lines, symbolically representing heaven (masculine) and earth
(feminine), form the ancient Caduceus. At one time on
this earth, these two energies rested easily together in a balance state of
unity. Tragically, his oneness of being was destroyed and through this
separation, paradise was lost. The Archangel became Saint Michael, the slayer
of the dragon/goddess instead of the unifier and the protector of the earth
energies and the defender of the feminine in her goddess mantle. We
will work with both of these energies (Sun and Serpent) in ceremony and through experiential
exercises to bring oneness and wholeness back to the earth and to ourselves.
Our quest for the Holy Grail is a spiritual quest—a quest of
inner wholeness, self-fulfillment and oneness with the divine. Our pilgrimage
takes the form of a “passage” into the Otherworld and becomes a gateway into
the realms of wonder, aspiration and the heart. As we immerse ourselves in this
ancient and ageless land, we explore known and little-known sacred sites as we
experience personal transformation and power through initiation, ritual,
ceremony and experiential exercises whilst seeking the knowledge and the
mysteries of the Grail, Tolkien’s Ring of Power, the Celts/Druids, the Green Man, Merlin, and the Sun
and the Serpent.
Come join the Sun (Jim) and the Serpent (Sher) on a
spiritual adventure and pilgrimage of a lifetime. As with all spiritual
pilgrimages, the “spirit of the moment” determines direction and action, which may result in a change of plans. The following is a brief and tentative over-view of our
journey. Magic often happens in an unexpected moment of indescribable mystery.

Jim at St. Nectan’s Kieve and
Waterfall, 1997
Saturday
– Arrive Heathrow/London where you will be greeted by Jim and coached to
Tintagel, Cornwall. Our stay is at the Wooten’s, a lovely Inn overlooking the ocean and the
ruins of Tintagel Castle. Our pilgrimage begins with an introductory session in
the evening.
Sunday
– The Archangel Mikael’s day. We begin our quest with a dawn water initiation
in mystical Rocky Valley followed by ceremony at St. Nectan’s Kieve and
Waterfall. The Kieve has been a place of reverence, worship and healing since
pre-Christian times. People of many faiths have walked the ancient route to the
waterfall to bathe in its mysterious and therapeutic atmosphere. St. Nectan’s
wooded glen and waterfall are magical and maintain an atmosphere of Celtic
mystery and reverence. The Celts saw the natural stone Kieve (Cornish for
basin) made by the waterfall as a cauldron of knowledge, healing and
regeneration. In legend the knights of King Arthur began their Grail quest from
St. Nectan’s Glen.
In the afternoon, we visit the "widow’s window" on the
Tintagel cliffs. This is a portal into other worlds and dimensions. There’s a
chance that Peter Pracownik will be in town. Peter and his wife Jasmine are
friends of ours and any opportunity to spend time with them is awesome. Besides
being a well-known fantasy artist, he is a professional musician and master of
symbology.
Monday
– Today we travel to
St. Michael’s Mount. We cross the ancient pathway, which
is only accessible when the tide is out, to the Mount and climb to the castle
above. The castle sits on St. Michael’s ley line which goes from the
ocean and up through Glastonbury Tor, or in times past, Avalon. Both the sun
and the serpent ley-lines intertwine at this most sacred place. It was at
this spot in approximately 450 CE that a fisherman saw a vision of the
Archangel Michael.

St. Michael's Mount, 1998
Archangel Mikael is the guardian
of the mysteries and earthly harmony. He is symbolized with a sword in his
right hand the balance scales in his left representing the balance of light and
dark. This day presents us with the opportunity, in this most mystical and magical space, to balance
our own light and dark.
Tuesday – We return to Rocky Valley
and investigate labyrinth magic and the symbolism of the Green Man and Tolkien’s Ring of Power as we
explore the inner and outer worlds. We travel on to Boscastle and the new age
shop of Paul Broadhurst, another friend. Paul is the co-author of The Sun
and the Serpent and a master of earth energies and dowsing ley-lines.
Tonight, we visit, for ritual and ceremony, volcanic Merlin’s Cave and/or the
little known volcanic Dragon’s Cave. This is a night not to be missed.

Merlin's Cave
The
elemental alchemy and magic of Merlin can be best symbolized by his birth—in
the mouth of the cave, the fire of the sun rained down on the foaming, swirling
sea (water) which had been beat into a fury by the wind (air), until the
Merlin, who was to become the archetypal wizard, was delivered on the flat
birthing stone of the earth.
Wednesday – We leave Tintagel with lightened
hearts and travel to Avalon or Glastonbury or as I call it, Elder Wales. Two
Millenniums ago, Glastonbury would have been Welsh not English. On our way, we visit, for meditative and journeywork, the
lovely church of St. Michael, which is poised on the top of the volcanic mound
of Brentor. We arrive in Glastonbury and check in at the George and Pilgrim’s
Inn.

Jim and Sher on Brentor, 1998
Thursday – Today, we travel to Wales—the
home of the Druids and visit Tintern Abbey as well as Hay on Wye, home of the largest
number of second-hand booksellers in the world. We first arrive at one
of the most photographed ruins in Britain, those of hauntingly beautiful Tintern
Abbey, nestled snugly on the banks of the Wye below the wooded hills made
famous by poet William Wordsworth.
Friday – We begin this day with a tentative dawn
ceremony within the rings of Stonehenge. We then travel on to West Kennet Long Barrow, the largest chamber tomb in Britain and one of the greatest
stone circles in the British Isles, the Serpent Temple complex of Avebury,
which is far more ancient than
Stonehenge. The whole Avebury landscape is a physical representation on the
land of the goddess. It’s original 600 plus massive stones were at one time
revered for their fertility magic, but alas, all that is left is twenty-seven of
these awesome stones of mystery.

Avebury, 1981
Sher and I first
visited Avebury in 1981 and we can tell you that this is an awesome sacred
place with much memory and magic still held within the stones. Within this
Serpent Temple of Avebury, known as the navel or omphalos—the meeting place of
heaven and earth, we will meditate and journey to discover the Keltic
ancestors, the past and the power of this most special place of the Sun and
the Serpent.
Saturday – Today is spent exploring the magic of the Isle of Avalon, a place so familiar
to my soul. We spend time at the Glastonbury Abbey and then visit the Chalice
Well where we experience its tranquil beauty and explore the Pythagorean
Mysteries of the vesica piscis.

Two intersecting circles forming the vesica piscis,
spear passes through them from hinge to fastening,
spirit and matter together—womb of time,
one divine purpose pierces them—the spear of truth.
Our day is completed on the Glastonbury Tor. Two thousand years ago, the sea washed right to the foot of
the Tor. Ancient myth has it
that here, called Avalon, where the sea met the land, was the meeting place of
the dead. It was at this point where they passed to another level of existence.
The tower on the summit of the Tor is all that remains of
the Church of St. Michael. It is dedicated to Mikael, the Sun Archangel, known
to the Celt’s as the light giver Lugh or the Sun God Bel. He is
depicted on the tower weighing the souls of the dead along with an image of St.
Bridget or the Celtic Bride milking her cow. There are many myths and legends
concerning the Tor such as it being hollow and the gateway or passageway to Annwn,
the Celtic Otherworld. This marvelous realm exists alongside but hidden from
our materialistic world. However, at certain times and in certain places, the
veil may be lifted and you may see and experience. The Tor is one such place
and dawn and sunset are two such times.
We will see and experience this magic at sunset with a
closing ceremony.
