HAKUSAN HOMBU DOJO

JC on Mt. Hakusan, Japan, May 2005
The Hakusan Hombu Dojo, founded and established by Rev. JC
Husfelt, D. D. in 1990, is a traditional bujutsu school of martial and
spiritual training. The name means “sacred white mountain” and refers to one of
the three sacred mountains of Japan. The other two are Tateyama and Fujisan.
Japanese Grandmaster Shoto Tanemura presented the name, Hakusan Dojo, to Rev. Dr.
Husfelt after having the name of the dojo appear to Tanemura Sensei in a vision.
From ancient times, Mount Hakusan (2702m), the supposed home
of a pure and beautiful goddess, has been the object of religious worship. The
common people regarded it as special and sacred. As it is snow-capped year-round, the local people depended on it to provide water
for their rice fields. This volcanic mountain, said to be also the home of the water
god and the dragon god, is not only sacred to the Shugen-do Mountain Wizards,
but with its folklore of magic and mystery has invoked many myths and legends:

“In 717, the great Buddhist monk and teacher, Taicho Daishi,
guided by a woodcutter Gongoro Sasakiri, climbed high up Mount Hakusan, an
isolated sacred mountain, in order to meditate. One night, while Taicho was
sleeping after beginning his rigorous regime of spiritual exercises, the
guardian deity of Mount Hakusan appeared to him in a dream and said: ‘Lying
about twenty-three kilometers from the foot of the mountain is a village called
Awazu. There you will find an underground spring of hot water with wondrous,
curative powers, which have been bestowed upon it by Yakushi Nyorai, the Divine
Healer. However, the villagers are unaware of this blessing. Go down from the
mountain and go to Awazu. With the people of the village, unearth the hot
spring and it will serve them forever.’” (www.henokiens.com/gb/hoshi1.html)

The goddess of Hakusan (Hakusan Myōri Daibosatsu)
Mount Haku-san’s guardian deities
are Izanagi no mikoto and Izanami no mikoto (associated with magic), the primal couple in Shintō
mythology, and Princess Kukuri, the goddess who arbitrated between Izanagi and Izanami when they quarreled at Yomotsuhirasaka. Please see our page
on Shintō for more information regarding Izanagi and Izanami.
"Taicho-Kasho Den"[the Tradition of the Buddhist priest Taicho]… gives a chronological biography of the legendary founder of the Mt. Hakusan, and was probably written in Echizen district… There are some indications that Taicho underwent shamanic initiation… Priest Genbo, who was introduced as a teacher of Taicho in the text, is referred as an ascetic who might master Gumonji-ho method concerning Bodhisattva Kokuzo [Akacagarbhah]…. Descriptions of two of Taicho's followers, Fuseri and Kiyosada, represent the Taicho's shamanic power.” ( www.komatsu-c.ac.jp/~yositani/Haku3.htm)
“The Morning Star meditation (Gumonji-ho)…involves visualization of the deity Kokuzo in the form of Venus, the morning star… In the Morning Star meditation the focus of ritual is the mantra, while the subject of esoteric union is the universe itself symbolized by Venus. Shingon considers the Morning Star meditation to refer back to Shakyamuni’s (Buddha’s) experience of seeing the bright morning star at the moment of his enlightenment under the bodhi tree.” (Shingon, Taiko Yamasaki)
