Mountains, beautiful and powerful, have a mystic allure to them. They reach toward the heavens in an enchanted way. Many ‘enter the peaks’ for various recreational reasons as if the mountains are separate from them and are only there to provide a means for their possible exercise and enjoyment. On the other hand, down through the Ages, people have ‘entered the mountain’ not to be separate from, but to become one with, the power and magic of the mountain. It was a way to feel truly ‘alive’ and to gain inner strength from the power that resided within the mountain. To the Japanese, this process of mastering spiritual powers by retreat to and practice within the sacred mountains was called Shugendo—‘way of ascetic training.’ Through such austerities one's spiritual and mental powers are gradually built up until one eventually becomes a mountain mystic, a ‘person of power.’

The word asceticism  (asketikos) derives from the Greek philosophical, spiritual, ethical, and gymnastic exercises (askein- to exercise) of the will, mind, and body. To carry out ascetic acts is the endeavor to attain enlightenment. Doctrine and knowledge are not so important, but rather using one's own inner perception directly.

The mysterious qualities of mountains have always lent themselves to romantic tales of a heroic person going off into the wildness of nature to discover himself or herself. This type of mountain pilgrimage and training is about pushing the limits of our mind and body, to breathe in the energy of nature, and to see our self clearly. It is the opportunity to discipline our self to reach a high state, spiritually and intellectually where the ultimate goal is self-improvement and the appreciation of the profoundness of ordinary existence.  

Throughout history truth-seekers have sought solitude and communion with mountain spirits in the sanctuary of the wilderness. This legacy of the interconnectedness of nature and human being, so long taken for granted, is so easily overlooked in the stress and fear-filled world that we live in.

Fire and water are sacred. Down through the Ages, people of power have recognized the ability of fire and water to cleanse and release old belief patterns and have used them in ancient healing practices and rituals of initiation. Throughout time sages have generated magical or supernatural powers by accessing one's internal heat/fire through asceticism. By such practice, an individual accesses the original creative energy of the cosmos.

Our training involves such austerities as standing under icy waterfalls, pre-dawn submersion in mountain streams, fire walking and other experiential spiritual exercises that will transform and renew as well as giving us a sense of personal accomplishment. An accomplishment that comes from pushing the limits of our mind, body, spirit and emotions that eclipses anything that we would find in our ordinary life. This is about getting back to the basics of being human.

Our training is educational as well. This spirit education is called Sanmitsu, three Mysteries, in the Japanese traditions: the Mystery of the Body (shimmitsu), the Mystery of Speech (gomitsu) and the Mystery of Mind (imitsu). This method is a cross-cultural way to transformation through the use of the voice, the body and the mind for manifestation and success. If you are seeking renewal and a ‘vision’ for your future or a ‘vision’ for your company, you need this training.

As with all of our trainings, participation in any exercise is optional. This training is appropriate for any adult, 18 years and older; no previous martial or spiritual experience is necessary. We impose no limitations; do not let your mind impose one.
