Human’s Current Relationship to Nature

The loving embrace of Kane, sun, is warmth that words can never really properly describe but at all times must be experienced. The Ha, the breath of life, warmly courses throughout my body and soul. In front of me is a seascape that a human artist could never fully replicate. Turquoise-studded thundering waves, crashing but then receding, are interlaced throughout with the beautiful songs of our winged relations. This for me is the symphony of life, a life that resonates so deeply within the core of my heart, a heart that is extremely fulfilled and happy at this moment.

It is September of 2005 and my wife, Sherry, and I have returned to the Big Island of Hawaii after an absence of 11 years. And it is here where I am writing this commentary.

My heart is extremely happy to be back on the island where I had my vision in 1993 and an island that speaks so deeply of my own soul and personality. My fiery side has been known to break down the inner wounded structures of others. This is not to hurt them but to provide fertile ground for new inner growth. Many times the ones who are on the receiving end of my fire are resistant to losing their known structures, painful as those may be, because they fear the unknown more than the known.

The energy of the Big Island is likewise very intense. It mirrors the fiery awesome power of the tempestuous volcano goddess, Pele. On this island, she is known as Pele ai honua—‘Pele who eats the land.’ One of my most vivid memories being on this island in 1992 was seeing and experiencing Pele’s life blood flowing into the ocean—creating new land; a new birth, which I deemed ‘baby earth.’ If a person truly believed and trusted, lying on this newly formed ‘baby earth,’ could, I believe, go a long way in healing a person’s ills, possibly even cancer—radiation kills cancer cells, why couldn’t Pele’s ‘baby earth energy’ transform and heal the cells? At the very least, it would be a memory that would last a lifetime.

My heart, on the other hand, was deeply saddened by the greedy materialistic changes that have occurred on this island over the past 12 years. Development everywhere and the destruction of nature have taken hold on this island.

The Aloha Spirit is the spirit of the Hawaiian Islands. It is the spirit of nature—a reverence and respect for all things and the ‘garden’ that surrounds us. Only a fool would think that we have been “kicked out of this ‘garden.’” But then, if you believe that nonsense, it would justify behaviors of destruction—it’s not our garden any longer, so let’s ravage and destroy it. That is just what is happening.

I experienced this same story of spiritual desecration and nature’s destruction four months earlier when I had returned with my son and a group of our martial art students to Koyasan, Japan. In 1987 I had experienced on Koyasan the transformational energy of the esoteric Buddhist deity—Fudo Myoo through a ‘descending spirit exorcism.’

A Japanese esoteric shaman priest had conducted this ceremony at midnight in front of the great Kôbô Daishi mausoleum, the originator of Japanese Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. Eighteen years later, this great mountain of Kôbô Daishi’s and his temple city, in my opinion, had been corrupted into one of materialistic greed—the spiritual essence had been sucked dry.

And so it seemingly goes all across the earth, the destruction of nature, and the spiritual energy and power that goes along with it, all in the name of ‘development,’ ‘progress’ and even for the superficial needs of ‘New Age people.’ When I had walked the Incan trail, the Royal Path, to Machu Picchu in the 1980’s, we were the only ones on the trail. Now supposedly, there are showers and even permits are needed as it is so crowed with people.

Compared to Koyasan and other likewise desecrated sacred areas on this most beautiful earth, the mana (spiritual power) is still strong on this island—Pele’s island. But still, the land and the sea, the ancestors and the Native Hawaiians are crying their tears of sadness for what has been lost. Houses and condos are built everywhere, even on agricultural-zoned land. Money talks for most people louder than the spirit does even when the benefits of not developing are known such as clean water and climate stabilization.

The ‘tech boom’ made millionaires out of many people. This led to more development and destruction of nature to further the egos and fervor of investors. Most people jumped at the chance to reap, or was it rape, the benefits from tech stocks. Then came the bust.

But never fret; there are always ones to fuel the next money craze such as the housing market. To keep the economy from ‘tanking’ after the burst of the ‘tech bubble’—war was the first priority and then low interest rates were offered on home mortgages. Consumer credit caused the frenzy for building houses and more houses; buy up the land and build, build and build: not what is necessary in square footage, but larger and larger homes (all of course with three-car garages). One home seems not to be enough—second homes, retirement homes; it doesn’t matter just more, more and more.

This moneymaking ploy of developers has ultimately harmed the environment long-term and hastened global-warming, resulting in rising sea levels. I wonder how many of these homes will be destroyed by the forces of nature over the coming decade?

But it is never too late. I am just the messenger; I need your help in righting these wrongs and re-establishing pono (balance/harmony) on earth. You can make a difference, but it begins with your own state of heart and mind. This book is a guide to help you heal and to become pono, where your ‘heart becomes your face.’

As I have emphasized, nature is extremely important. In my opinion, religion and spiritual teachings can never be separated from nature—the primary teacher is always nature. Religion and spiritual studies are supposed to explore and seek knowledge about the mysteries of life, death and creation. This seeking of truth, about these mysteries and the pursuit of a fulfilled life and happiness, cannot be found in a book, no matter if some human says it is the ‘word of God;’ nor can it be found within human made structures—it can only be found in nature and our relationship to the earth and to the heavens. The true foundation of any church or religious structure is the green earth with the roof being the blue sky above.

Books written, degrees held or clothes worn do not impress nature. Nature only responds to one’s heart and mind. And it is the heart (body) and the mind that this website and my books focus on and are based on.
